What is Compost?

Compost is organic material that can be used as a soils amendment, or as medium to grow plants.  Compost is a stable, nutrient enriched, microbial fillied material with a content called humus that is dark brown or black and has a soil-like, earthy smell. It is created by combining organic wastes (grass clippings, food waste, and manures) into piles to accelerate the decomposition of the materials.

Benefits of Compost

  • Improves overall soil quality
  • Improves nutrient content
  • Reduces soil compaction and crusting
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers
  • Improves root growth and yields
  • Suppresses plant diseases and pests
  • Improves water infiltration and drought tolerance
  • Increases beneficial microbial and earthworm populations
  • Prevents soil erosion
  • Binds heavy metals in contaminated soils
  • Degrades many pesticides
  • Absorbs odors and degrades volitile organic compounds (VOC's)
  • Diverts organics from landfills into compost, reducing waste and methane production

Where to use Compost?

Compost can be used anywhere you wish to improve your soil and it has the ability to help regenerate poor soils. It is also full of beneficial microorganisms and nutrients that will improve the soil structure and benefit the plants around it. Composting will help you reduce the need for water, fertilizer, and pesticides.
